J.D. Student Profile: Christopher Day
As AI continues to transform the way the world conducts business, companies are having to strategize about the best uses for the new technology, and how to assess vulnerabilities that may arise. Cleveland State’s Online J.D. Student, Christopher Day, recently joined Marriott Vacations Worldwide as the leader of their Data and AI Governance program. We spoke with Christopher about his experience with the program, and how his time with CSU prepared him for this opportunity.
Tell us a bit about your background and how you found yourself in your role.
I began my professional journey as a medic in the U.S. Air Force, where I learned the value of discipline, service and decisive action. After completing my service, I took those lessons to KPMG and later HHM CPAs, ultimately becoming Chief Innovation Officer.
Today, I lead Data & AI Governance at Marriott Vacations Worldwide, helping the business deploy conversational AI and other advanced solutions that deliver real, measurable results.
I have always aspired to practice law, but a traditional, full-time program wasn’t compatible with a growing career and a family. Cleveland State’s Online J.D. removed that barrier and allowed me to advance my legal education while continuing to grow my career, an opportunity I could not pass up.
What is Marriott Vacations Worldwide's AI Governance Program?
When I joined Marriott Vacations Worldwide, I launched a new Data & AI Governance program from the ground up. Our guiding principle is “trust by design.” We embed privacy, ethics and reliability into every AI initiative so guests can fully enjoy their vacations knowing their data, and their experience, are in safe hands. By pairing rigorous governance with clear business objectives, we accelerate responsible adoption rather than slow it down.
I aim to remain at the forefront of AI innovation while laying down a governance framework that genuinely improves the lives of our owners, guests and associates. Ultimately, I want Marriott Vacations Worldwide to be the industry benchmark for transparent, trustworthy AI. By doing this we can give all of our stakeholders' peace of mind.
How do you see AI law changing over the years?
AI law is still in its infancy. As technology evolves, statutes and regulations will need to keep pace, and novel case law will emerge that shapes everything from consumer rights to corporate accountability. The ripple effects will be felt across data protection and privacy frameworks worldwide, demanding lawyers who understand both the technical landscape and the legal one.
How did CSU’s Online J.D. program prepare you for this role?
The J.D. program has added another essential “tool” to my toolkit. With a foundation in technology and business, legal training enables me to act as the bridge among engineers, executives and regulators. It hones my ability to spot issues before they become roadblocks and to craft solutions that stand up both commercially and legally. Skills that are at the heart of building trust by design.
Do you have any advice for future J.D. students?
Leverage every resource the program offers: research tools, writing centers and especially networking events because they are designed for your success. Just as important, remember that the faculty is deeply invested in the achievements of online students. They appreciate the unique challenges you face and continuously refine the learning experience to help you thrive.
What would you say to those unsure about pursuing a career in law?
Take the leap. We live in a time of unprecedented access to knowledge and opportunity. A J.D. is especially powerful for professionals in data, privacy, AI, technology or cybersecurity, but its value extends far beyond those fields. Growth happens outside your comfort zone, and CSU provides the support and nourishment to help that growth take root.
Any final thoughts?
I’m grateful to the CSU College of Law community for creating an environment where non-traditional students can excel. If my journey proves anything, it’s that with the right program and support, you don’t have to choose between advancing your career and pursuing your dreams, you can do both, and do them.
