Profile
Professor Kalir joined the law faculty in 2012. He teaches at the Civil Litigation Clinic where he supervises students and represents underprivileged clients in a wide array of civil matters. Among others, Kalir and his students represented clients before Ohio State Courts of all levels (municipal, common pleas, Court of Appeals and Ohio Supreme Court) as well as federal courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. Kalir also filed several Amicus (friend-of-court) Briefs with the United State Supreme Court, including a brief on behalf of the National Association of Social Workers and the Cuyahoga County Department of Law in the landmark Same-Sex Marriage case.
Before arriving in Cleveland, Kalir practiced antitrust and other federal litigation law with Skadden Arps in New York. Prior to joining Skadden, Kalir completed his LL.M (Kent Scholar - Highest Honors) at Columbia Law School and served as a Senior Editor of the Columbia Business Law Review. He was later selected as an Associate-in-Law, teaching the International LL.M class for two years. Several years later, he returned to Columbia as an adjunct professor to co-teach a seminar on biblical jurisprudence with Professor George Fletcher.
Kalir was born and raised in Tel Aviv and served in the Israeli Defense Forces for three years. He began his legal studies at the Hebrew University Law School, where he earned his LL.B (cum laude) and LL.M (summa cum laude) degrees, taught Contract Law and Jurisprudence as an instructor and served on the editorial board of the Law Review ("Mishpatim"). Following his studies, Kalir clerked for the Hon. Miriam Naor, then-Judge and currently the Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court. Practicing law in Israel, Professor Kalir had the privilege of serving all three branches of the Israeli Government. He also argued several times successfully before the Israeli Supreme Court. In 2011, Kalir completed a translation of a book by Israel's former Chief Justice, Professor Aharon Barak, entitled, Proportionality: Constitutional Rights and Their Limitations Cambridge 2012.
Kalir is a member of the New York and Ohio Bars, as well as the U.S. Supreme Court, Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Northern District of Ohio, the Southern District of New York and the Board of Immigration Appeals.
