Joan Elizabeth Niederriter received her PhD in Urban Education from Cleveland State University in 2009. She received her BSN and MSN (nursing) as a dual degree from Akron University in 1998 in nursing education and geriatrics. Her ADN in nursing was received in 1994 from Cuyahoga Community College. She started her nursing career at Cleveland Clinic as a medical surgical nurse in 1994 and currently works PRN as a Nursing Operations Manager for the hospital and PRN in Interventional Radiology. In 2002 she was hired as an instructor at Cleveland State University and worked as an associate professor teaching medical surgical nursing didactic and clinical courses. She retired from full-time teaching in May 2020 but continues to teach in didactic and clinical courses. She was a co-investigator for two National Institute of Health grants that focus on providing both team based, patient centered care for geriatric patients and educating students and providers on providing geriatric based care. She has interest in simulation, student educational experiences and student/ patient safety. She has presented at various nursing venues on these topics as well as conducting research in these areas
